Customs Tower
Customs Tower
At the end of Largo do Toural is where you will find the best preserved section of the wall, Customs Tower, and there you will find the inscription “Aqui nasceu Portugal” (Portugal was born here). As you walk through the streets of Guimarães, you will certainly come across sections of the city walls. The original wall dates back to the mid-13th century, but it was extended over the following centuries. The longest section is on Avenida Alberto Sampaio. On Rua de Santo António, you can see parts of the wall almost blending into the houses.
The phrase “Aqui nasceu Portugal” (Portugal was born here) is engraved on a very visible part of the wall, near the entrance to the historic centre, and symbolises the birth of the Portuguese national identity. This is not a literal statement of the birth of the country in that exact spot, but rather a historical symbol of the importance of Guimarães in the formation of Portugal.
