Nicolinas Festivities

The Nicolinas Festivities in Guimarães, celebrated annually between 29 November and 7 December, represent one of the oldest and most emblematic student traditions in Portugal. In 2025, these festivities continue to be a vibrant symbol of Guimarães identity, bringing together students, alumni and the local community around rituals that combine devotion, satire, music and conviviality.

Pinheiro (November 29): It marks the beginning of the festivities with a night-time parade through the city streets, where students carry a large pine tree, to the sound of drums and snare drums. Before the parade, there are the Nicolinas Suppers, traditional dinners that bring together former and current students.

The Magusto (Nov 30): A chestnut-roasting gathering to celebrate friendship.

The Pregão: A humorous speech addressing local or current issues.

The Maçãzinhas (Dec 6): Students offer apples to young women as a gesture of respect.
